Heritage-listed Callan Park is the jewel of the Inner West, and it's incredibly important to our community. Many local residents have been actively campaigning to keep Callan Park in public hands for decades.
Disappointingly, a Labor-led Upper House Inquiry on Greater Sydney Parklands has handed down 26 recommendations, including proposed amendments to the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act which would make it easier to commercialise parts of Callan Park.
The most worrying recommendation is to remove provisions that limit development in Callan Park to not-for-profit purposes.
This is a slippery slope that could see vital open green space taken away from our community. With more development on the horizon in the Inner West, current and future residents need access to open green space now more than ever.
The NSW Labor Government is yet to respond to the Inquiry recommendations. We have an opportunity now to make sure our community's voice is heard.
