Bridge Road Cycleway Safety Audit

Investment in cycling infrastructure is incredibly important in a growing city like Sydney. If we want to encourage less reliance on private vehicles, we must ensure we're providing safe and well-constructed separated cycleways wherever possible.
The Bridge Road Cycleway was installed as a pop-up cycleway during the Covid pandemic to give people additional travel options. However, significant concerns have been raised by the local community since the cycleway was installed, with concerns about a lack of genuine community consultation in determining the location of the cycleway and questions about safety.
There are plans to convert this to a permanent cycleway.
Local advocacy group, Bridge Road Friends commissioned a safety audit of the cycleway. This audit was undertaken by the Traffic Engineering Centre, with their engineers reporting they believed that "the proposed permanent cyclist facilities along Pyrmont Bridge Road would not create a reasonably safe environment for cyclists, pedestrians, and motorists. Instead, it is likely to increase the conflict, number of incidents, and ultimately the chance of potentially severe collisions..."
Community members have contacted me to express their concerns about these findings, and I've been liaising with both the City of Sydney and Transport for NSW to seek further information.
Conversations are ongoing with the City of Sydney, Transport for NSW and local community members to address concerns raised, while ensuring safe cycling infrastructure is delivered for our community.
