A Better Future for Bays West - Sign Our Petition
Sign our petition: Support a better future for Bays West with more social, affordable and public housing and better infrastruture

There is no doubt that Bays West is where new homes should go - above a metro station, close to jobs, close to services, and supported by infrastructure. But delivering just 10% affordable housing on publicly owned land in the middle of the worst housing crisis in generations is not good enough.
Before the 2023 election, NSW Labor promised that surplus government land would deliver 30% social, affordable, and universal housing. At Bays West, that commitment has been slashed to just 10%.
This is public land. If we are giving up Sydney Harbour’s last working port for this development, it must deliver genuine public benefit - not become a cash cow for developers or another exclusive waterfront enclave for the wealthy. I'm calling on the NSW Government to deliver at least 30% public, social, and affordable housing at Bays West.
We also need to ensure the infrastructure is in place to support a growing population. This includes:
- Delivering a new primary school
- Boosting capacity at the local high schools
- Prioritising more public transport
- Expanding walking and cycling infrastructure
This precinct has faced the brunt of traffic congestion after the opening of the disastrous Rozelle interchange. We cannot afford a repeat. The government must work to minimise car reliance in the Bays Precinct. They also need to consult widely with the community to ensure this new precinct integrates seamlessly with Balmain and Rozelle
And finally, we're pushing them to work with the Unions and local workers to ensure a staged approach to the closure of the Glebe Island Port. Please add your name to our petition to support a more affordable, sustainable vision for the future of Bays West and Glebe Island.
To the NSW Premier, we call on the NSW Government to:
- Honour its commitment and deliver at least 30% social, affordable and public housing on surplus government land at Bays West
- Deliver a new primary school in Bays West
- Boost capacity at the local high schools
- Prioritise more public transport, as well as walking and cycling infrastructure to ensure Bays West is a very low car precinct
- Consult widely with the local community to ensure Bays West integrates seamlessly with Rozelle and Balmain
- Consult with local workers and Unions to achieve a staged approach to the closure of Glebe Island Port and a fair transition for workers
