Huge Community Win as Wentworth Park Track Set to Close a Year Early

July 23, 2026

|Greens MP for Balmain Kobi Shetty has joined community members and advocates to celebrate the announcement that the Wentworth Park greyhound track will be demolished a year earlier than planned, with the parkland finally returned to the community.

This is a major win for local residents, community advocates, animal welfare campaigners and The Greens, who have pushed for years to end greyhound racing at Wentworth Park and restore this precious inner-city parkland for public use.

This has been a longstanding community campaign over many years. In December last year, over 100 people came together for our Picnic to Reclaim Wentworth Park. This helped secure the initial plans for Wentworth Park to return to us at the end of 2027. Ongoing pressure has brought that date forward by 12 months.

Kobi Shetty MP for Balmain said:

“This is a huge win for the community and for everyone who has campaigned for years to return Wentworth Park to the public.

“Wentworth Park sits in one of the densest parts of Sydney, where communities are crying out for more green space. The early return of this land is a huge step forward for the health, wellbeing and liveability of the Pyrmont, Ultimo, Glebe and broader inner-city community.

“We’ve had thousands of people engaged with this campaign over many years, and I know they’ll all be so happy to hear that the government has listened to their calls and that cruel greyhound racing is being shut down early, in favour of much-needed parkland for our community.

“This win belongs to the community advocates, animal welfare campaigners and local residents who never gave up. They kept the pressure on and today they have delivered a real result.”
