ENDING GAMBLING HARM

Gambling harm is a serious public health issue that is affecting families and communities across NSW. Children are being exposed to gambling ads, and communities are dealing with the social and financial impacts of pokies losses. For too long, governments have prioritised the profits of the gambling industry over the well-being of our communities. I’m working to put people before profits and reduce gambling harm in NSW.

OUR PLAN TO END GAMBLING HARM

  • Ban gambling advertising - Work with the federal government to ban gambling ads online, on TV, and on radio, because exposure to gambling through advertising is normalising risky gambling behaviour for young people.
  • Limit the number of pokies – Pokies and other electronic gaming machines should be restricted to casinos and phased out completely from clubs and hotels
  • End all-hours gaming exemptions -
Poker machines shouldn’t be permitted to run 24 hours a day; they should be shut down from midnight to 10am.
  • Mandatory cashless gaming - Cashless gaming should become mandatory across all venues to minimise gambling harm and reduce the risk of money laundering and criminal activity associated with gambling.

MY TRACK RECORD

By working with community groups and harm minimisation advocates, I’m continuing to push for stronger gambling laws and action to minimise harm.

  • Supported gambling reforms to make it an offence for gambling businesses to accept stolen money and to fail to report the use of stolen money to legal authorities (Hansard)
  • Questioned the NSW Government about the exemptions given to 20% of venues in NSW that allow them to run after hours during the typical shutdown period from 4am (Hansard)
  • Pushed for more action to ban gambling ads and reduce the exposure of children and young people to gambling content (Hansard) and asked the NSW Premier to do more than just ban ads on public transport (Hansard)
  • Pushed for a ban of gambling advertising on public land (Watch)
