Disappointingly, NSW Premier Chris Minns has announced plans to hand sweeping new powers to the NSW police force.
These new powers will allow police to seize mobile phones without a warrant and to use military-grade surveillance technology developed in Israel and used by ICE Agents in the United States to make a direct copy of every piece of data stored on your device.
Legal experts have warned that these laws are so broad, they could be used by police to seize the mobile data of someone at a peaceful protest, or an individual pulled over at a simple traffic stop. Police could get access to every photo taken, every text message sent - all gained without a warrant and with no court oversight.
We’ve already seen shocking examples of police misconduct aired on Four Corners this year. NSW Labor shouldn’t hand more power to police when we know they’re struggling with a toxic culture and institutionalised violence.

- Abandon plans to allow NSW Police to access mobile phones without a warrant and without court oversight in NSW
- Retain the need for transparent court oversight for all mobile phone searches
- Scrap partnerships with Israeli surveillance companies like Cellebrite that have known connections to war crimes in Gaza, as well as suspected human rights abuses in Bahrain and Myanmar.
