Public Land at Blackwattle Bay Must Deliver Affordable Homes

Sign our petition: Tell the NSW Labor Government to deliver social, affordable and key worker homes for Blackwattle Bay

Everyone deserves an affordable place to call home. Unfortunately, across Sydney, the housing affordability crisis continues to worsen, pushing young families and key workers like nurses and teachers out of our community.

The NSW Labor Government committed to delivering 30% social and affordable housing on surplus government-owned land. It’s deeply disappointing to now see proposals for Blackwattle Bay, at the former fish market site, that would deliver just 7.5% affordable housing.

This once-in-a-generation redevelopment is an ideal opportunity to provide social, affordable and key worker housing in a well-connected area close to jobs, transport and services. Our community deserves a plan that supports diversity and delivers genuine public benefit.

Instead, the current proposal prioritises private development on public land, without delivering the level of affordable housing our community was promised or urgently needs. In the middle of a housing crisis, we cannot afford to miss opportunities like this.

We need more homes that people on low and moderate incomes can actually afford, including for key workers who keep our city running.

Please add your name to help keep the pressure on and ensure public land delivers public benefit.

To the NSW Minister for Housing,

We call on the NSW Government to honour its commitment to deliver 30% social, affordable and universal housing on surplus government land, including at Blackwattle Bay. Public land must be used to meet public needs.
