Sign our petition: Protect Callan Park from privatisation and secure its future for community use

Heritage-listed Callan Park is the jewel of the Inner West. Over the past decade, our community has worked together to revitalise Callan Park and protect it for future generations.

We've made so much progress since 2021. We've secured more than $25 million in public investment to restore buildings, improve public spaces and recover open green space. Community organisations and social enterprises have all put forward proposals to bring the historic Kirkbride precinct back to life in ways that serve the public good.

Disappointingly, the NSW Labor Government has rejected these proposals and is instead proposing to privatise Callan Park. Their proposed changes to the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act would:

  • Allow long-term commercial leases
  • Weaken safeguards on public open space and open the door to private development on land that has always belonged to the community.
  • Make it harder for not-for-profit organisations to access spaces and easier for private interests to take control of this historic park.

We do not need privatisation to bring Callan Park to life. We need the government to properly invest in its future and back the community organisations and non-for-profits ready to make it thrive.

To the NSW Premier

We call on the NSW Government to protect Callan Park from privatisation and secure its future for our community by:

  1. Upholding the core protections of the Callan Park (Special Provisions) Act 2002, including public ownership, public access and community-focused use
  2. Rejecting changes that would allow privatisation, weaken safeguards, or permit inappropriate private development on open green space
  3. Supporting not-for-profit organisations, arts groups, health providers and community organisations to activate and revitalise Callan Park
  4. Providing adequate public investment to restore buildings, maintain open space, and ensure Callan Park thrives as a public asset
