Major Public Transport Improvements for the Inner West in 2025
Kobi Shetty MP - Media Release - 02, December 2024
2nd December 2024
Ferry services will return to Balmain West Wharf at Elliott Street for the first time in a decade after it was controversially removed from the ferry network in 2013.
Work to get the Balmain West Wharf back online started today, with services expected to resume from mid-2025.
Once completed, the wharf will be incorporated into one of the three Sydney Ferry routes that chart west of the Harbour Bridge. Transport for NSW and operator Transdev are assessing which service within the western harbour will be best placed to incorporate the new stop.
The government has also confirmed that the F10 ferry service will be added to the broader Opal Network in the second half of 2025, and that a new stop will be included at Pirrama Park in Pyrmont.
Kobi Shetty MP for Balmain says:
“This is an excellent outcome for improved public transport connectivity in the Inner West.
“The 2013 closure of Elliott Street Wharf was bitterly disappointing for the community. Our community wants to see more access to public transport, not less, particularly with the increased congestion on the peninsula after the opening of the Rozelle Interchange.
“I’ve been working with the NSW Labor Government to ensure they follow through on their commitment to our community to re-open this wharf, so this news is incredibly welcome.
“Returning the Balmain West Ferry will give residents a quicker and more sustainable option to get into the city – helping to ease local congestion.
“I’m also pleased to see the government has responded to community calls to add the F10 Glebe ferry service to the broader Opal Network.
“This will allow passengers to make the most of Opal benefits including the $50 fare cap, and discounts for transferring between transport modes. Â
“I’m continuing to press for further improvements to the F10 Glebe service including adding a second vessel to ensure commuters aren’t left stranded when regular vehicle maintenance is undertaken. I’m also pushing for an added stop in Annandale.
